Tai Chi and Jazz

When I first approached Grandmaster Wang Chueh Jen about learning Tai Chi Boxing he said he would not teach me if I did not have a partner. Through his teachings I soon began to realize that Tai Chi is about listening, sensing, feeling, and knowing when to communicate with your partner or opponent.  In order to do so you must learn patterns, routines, drills, breathing, coordination, and many more things that will make your mind, body and spirit one with Tai Chi Boxing, but most of all you must learn to adapt and improvise according to the demands of the situation or circumstances just like Jazz.

The spirit of Jazz lives deep within me and whenever I do Tai Chi Boxing there is no separation between the music and the Tai Chi as they compliment each other. Therefore when I teach or practice Tai Chi Boxing I always listen to Jazz music especially the music of the one and only, Imam Melton Mustafa who is a long time friend and Tai Chi student of mine.
